What should a good heat-pump quote show?

  1. Heat-loss evidence. Look for the whole-home figure and, ideally, a room-by-room schedule. A headline heat-pump size is not proof of correct sizing.
  2. Outdoor and flow design temperatures. These assumptions help explain equipment sizing, emitter requirements and expected performance.
  3. The exact heat-pump model. Compare the precise proposed model and ask for relevant output and performance evidence at the proposed design conditions.
  4. Room-by-room emitter changes. The quote should make clear which radiators or other emitters change and why.
  5. Hot-water design. Cylinder size, location, controls, backup arrangements and any plumbing changes should be clear.
  6. Electrical and installation scope. Compare electrical work, controls, pipework, condensate/drainage, commissioning, making good, removal and exclusions.
  7. Performance claims. Treat COP, SCOP, efficiency, bill-saving and running-cost statements as claims until their assumptions and evidence are clear.
  8. MCS and Boiler Upgrade Scheme statements. Keep installer claims, product information and whole-installation eligibility separate. A grant deduction on a quote is not independent verification of eligibility.
  9. Price before and after any grant. Record the gross installed price and grant assumption separately so quotes remain comparable.
  10. Warranty, servicing and payment terms. Check what is covered, what keeps the warranty valid and when payments become due.

What to do when two quotes disagree

  1. Identify the disagreement. Is it heat loss, flow temperature, model capacity, emitters, installed scope or grant assumptions?
  2. Ask for the underlying evidence. Request room-by-room heat loss, design temperatures and equipment performance at the proposed conditions.
  3. Separate design from scope. A higher price may simply include more electrical, emitter, cylinder or making-good work.
  4. Ask each installer to explain the difference in writing. Do not resolve a technical disagreement by choosing the lowest number automatically.

Does a BUS grant deduction prove eligibility?

No. Treat it as a quote assumption until the application-level requirements are confirmed. Check current Ofgem guidance and ask the installer to explain how the proposed installation meets the scheme rules.
